Botox vs. Dysport: Which One Is Right for You?
If you've started researching neurotoxin injections, you've probably noticed the same question everywhere: Botox or Dysport? Both are FDA-approved treatments that relax the small facial muscles responsible for expression lines, and both can leave you looking rested and refreshed without changing how you look when your face is still. But they aren't identical, and the right choice depends on your goals, your anatomy, and how quickly you want to see results.
At Uniquely You Aesthetics & Wellness in Holladay and Millcreek, we offer both Botox and Dysport, and we tailor the choice to each client rather than defaulting to one product for everyone. Here's what actually separates them.
What Botox and Dysport Have in Common
Both are botulinum toxin type A formulations. They work the same way: a small amount is injected into a targeted muscle, temporarily blocking the nerve signals that cause it to contract. Less muscle movement means fewer creases forming in the skin above it. Both are commonly used for frown lines between the brows, forehead lines, and crow's feet around the eyes, the three areas with FDA approval, though many providers also use these products off-label for a "lip flip," jawline slimming (masseter reduction), or a brow lift.
Where They Differ
The molecules are formulated differently, and that changes how they behave in the skin. Onset time: Dysport tends to show visible results a bit faster than Botox, sometimes within 2-3 days compared to Botox's typical 3-5 day onset, which can matter if you're treating for an event with a short lead time. Spread: Dysport's molecule is smaller and tends to diffuse slightly more within the treated area, which can be an advantage for larger areas like the forehead where an even, natural result benefits from that spread. Dosing units: Botox and Dysport aren't measured on a 1:1 scale, so a Dysport quote will often list more "units" than a Botox quote without meaning you're getting more treatment or paying more. Longevity: results from both typically last 3-4 months, with no meaningful longevity advantage for either product in most clients. Cost: pricing is comparable once you account for the different unit-dosing structures, and we'll walk you through the actual cost for your specific plan during your consultation.
Which One Should You Choose?
For most first-time clients, the honest answer is that either product will give you a great result. A few things can tip the decision: if you have an event coming up soon and want to see results within a few days, Dysport's faster onset may be preferable. If you've had success with one product in the past and know how your body responds, staying consistent often makes sense. And if you have very specific, delicate treatment goals, such as fine-tuning a brow shape, your injector's experience and judgment matter more than the brand of neurotoxin. This is exactly why we don't push one product over the other. During your consultation at our Millcreek office, we assess your facial anatomy, your goals, and your timeline, then recommend the option that fits you.
What to Expect at Your Appointment
Both treatments take about 15-20 minutes, involve minimal discomfort, and require no downtime. You can return to normal activities immediately, though we recommend avoiding strenuous exercise and lying flat for a few hours afterward. Most clients see full results within a week and return every 3-4 months to maintain them.
